Just Transition

Recent geopolitical crises have exposed the vulnerability of economies and value chains. A key bottleneck to accelerating the transition is a shortage of skills. Existing occupations are changing, and new competency profiles are emerging. The objective of this side event is to anchor green skills as a policy priority for economic development, employment and resilience. Using global data and country examples, it aims to motivate decision-makers to systematically integrate skills development into cross-sectoral transformation and development strategies. The event will present a new analysis demonstrating the links between investments in green skills and three policy goals: emissions reduction, energy and economic security, and high-quality employment. A keynote will present evidence on the costs of crises, avoided fossil fuel imports and global training needs. Countries with a high share of renewable energy and lower import dependency prove to be more resilient. A high-level panel of international organisations, think tanks and national governments will discuss effective policy packages, partnerships and financing approaches to scale up (re-)skilling. The Global Initiative on Jobs & Skills for the New Economy will contribute its global perspective on the nexus between green transformation, skills needs and training.
